This Ingredient Regenerates Skin Cells

Genetix is one of the first skincare brands that used melatonin as an active ingredient. I remember chatting with the editor at Women’s Health Magazine in New York City at a meeting when we first launched our serums. As we sat across from one another, my products in her hand, she asked me a really simple question about this meeting I had insisted on calling:

“Why melatonin? I’ve never heard of this in skincare before.”

“Because I’m a biologist,” I said, “And the CEO of this company. And as both, I know that melatonin has regenerative properties that belong in skincare.”

She tried the serums, and loved them! She even ended up writing a piece about them. You may have heard of melatonin as it relates to sleep. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone, and its main job is to help regulate the sleep/wake cycle. But how does this work?

It works so well in aiding our sleep process because it’s regenerative. At night, your skin switches from ‘protect’ mode to ‘repair’, and it’s time for the skin to recover from the day’s stresses. Melatonin production is boosted, which in turn accelerates skin regeneration and the production of antioxidant enzymes.

How does melatonin work when applied to the skin?

Research on topically applied melatonin is now showing that it works while you sleep to help prepare your skin’s natural defenses for the coming day

Research shows that topical melatonin acts as a potent antioxidant, working to reduce the harm inflicted on the skin during the day. Topical melatonin is also important in a routine with an anti-aging focus, as it helps to protect against free-radical induced cell damage.

Melatonin penetrates the skin and activates the synthesis of antioxidant enzymes. These antioxidant enzymes work to block free radicals and thus repair oxidative damage to the skin. This means melatonin is a major skin protectant, from free radical scavenging to DNA damage repair. Because of its broad antioxidant and radical scavenger properties, melatonin acts as a protective agent against UV-mediated damage in the skin, like that from sun exposure.

How can I include melatonin in my skincare routine? As melatonin has been demonstrated to be effective in reinforcing the skin against oxidative stress, it is an important addition to a comprehensive skincare routine which includes night-time steps.

Our revolutionary, innovative daytimedetox and nighttime serumsrepair environmental stress and damage from the previous day while stimulating natural antioxidant defenses, supporting healthier, younger-looking skin.

How do I use it?

Your serum should be applied every morning and night as part of your regular skincare routine. Use the dropper and apply four to five drops in the palm of your hand, then massage Genetix into the face and neck (avoiding the eye area), using your fingertips. You can use Genetix with other products in your regular night time routine.
