3 Easy Ways To Go Non-Toxic That You’re Probably Overlooking

Beauty Blog Home

When I worked in healthcare, I thought I knew everything about health. I had gotten the credentials, worked my way to the top of my field and devoured every science book I could get my hands on.

I was a hellish example of what I was learning.

Truly, I was landing in the hospital every few months. While I may have been healthy in some ways, I was VERY unhealthy in others.

Often while we think we’ve “gone green”, we’re truly overlooking some of the most basic essentials. Sometimes we forget to address the very start of our health. Actions we do every single day and don’t think twice about at all.

Here are 5 ways to go non-toxic that you’re probably overlooking:

Switching to organic deodorant can literally save your life! Here’s how: Antiperspirants conventionally work by reacting with your sweat. This creates a temporary plug in your sweat glands. Essentially, deodorants normally work by killing the bacteria that live on skin.

However, turn most deo’s around and you’ll find aluminum, fragrance and powerful toxic anti-bacterial agents. Is this really what we want to be absorbing into our skin? Plugging sweat glands and depositing elements like fragrance, aluminum, and powerful synthetic antibacterial agents right where so many of the body’s lymph glands, critical to the body’s immune system, seems completely unnecessary. Plus – this ritual does not allow our body to regulate it’s own B.O.

Organic deodorant works differently. Organic, aluminum-free deodorants are still extremely effective at fighting odor and are sensitive skin approved! Each deodorant I use is handcrafted and made with Organic, Non-GMO, Aluminum-Free ingredients in addition to using the highest quality organic essential oils. I love this deo from Stinkbug, which has incredibly healing ingredients that allow your body to regulate sweat while also providing a great natural scent. They never use any fragrances, chemicals or anything that you can not picture in it’s raw state!

I also adore cream deodorants if you need some extra coverage. They’re super moisturizing and work to completely reduce body odor. This formula is effective at fighting funk while also helping your body regulate your own sweat glands. Organic shea butter is a base for it’s wonderful moisturizing qualities. Sodium Bicarbonate is used to kill odor causing bacteria and the organic corn starch aids in absorbing perspiration. Organic coconut oil is used to help heal. You can’t go wrong here! It’s an amazing, simple, affordable switch!

Hand Sanitizer

In a 2011 study by the Epidemic Intelligence Service at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, researchers found that health care employees who were most likely to use hand sanitizers over soap and water for routine hand washing were nearly six times more at risk for outbreaks of norovirus, which causes most cases of acute gastroenteritis.

Overexposure to antibiotics or improper antibiotic use can lead to bacterial resistance, making it more difficult or even impossible to treat.

The active ingredient in some hand sanitizers is usually a type of alcohol that acts as an antimicrobial that kills bacteria. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control recommend ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, or a mix of both in a concentration of 60% to 95%. Alcohol dries skin and strips your delicate hands of moisture, which is needed to fight off disease!

This lavender hand cleanser from Stinkbug Naturals is a quick drying ALCOHOL FREE gel that contains the excellent properties of lavender and tea tree essential oils. Tea tree is extremely anti-septic and the lavender carries a great scent. I use this every day after playing with the pups! It truly helps and I NEVER get sick! At just $4.99 it’s super affordable!

Room/Cleansing Spray

What if I told you that the most popular room spray on the planet was completely toxic?

That it contained chemicals such as BHT, which is a known as a neurotoxin, endocrine disruptor, immunotoxicity, non-reproductive organ system toxicity, skin eye and is a serious lung irritator.

How about breathing in some acetaldehyde, known to cause cancer, toxic to reproduction and development, immunotoxin, non-reproductive organ system toxin, skin, eye and another huge lung irritator?

Chances are you’ve taken a big whiff of Propylene Glycol, which causes cancer, allergies, is toxic to immune system, accumulates in the system, non-reproductive organ system toxin, is classified with “enhanced skin absorption” and irritates the skin, eye and lungs.

Because those are the top ingredients in Febreze.

After P&G had spent several years and millions of dollars developing Febreze, it sold poorly. An analysis of this failure led to a radical revision of its marketing that relied on an understanding of how people connected the use of a product to their daily routines and habits. The company found that it had to sell different aspects of the product than those it was designed to have.

The company increased the perfume content, giving it a distinct smell, and redid the ad campaign in summer of 1998. Commercials for the product showed it being used the way the women always had  and the print ads showed breezes blowing through open windows with curtains. Febreze, the ads implied, was a pleasant treat, not a reminder that your home stinks.

Sales doubled within two months and reached $230 million a year later.

P&G had to spend millions of dollars marketing this toxic product, because it turned out that without shaping it as a reward – no one wanted it! Was it because it smelled like chemicals? There’s a good chance!

You don’t need to inhale this crap every time you want your house or room to smell better!

As an alternative, I LOVE Stinkbug’s Citrus Spice Natural Cleansing Spray, which I use to purify and scent our home, especially our bathroom and bedroom (where the dogs love to come in, fart and leave – haha). This plant based formula contains healing essential oils such as Clove Essential Oil, Lemon Essential Oil, Cinnamon Essential Oil, Eucalyptus Essential Oil and Rosemary Essential Oil. Witch hazel, one of the first ingredients, is a topical astringent that works wonders on hands, smells, odors, bacteria and so much more.

The possibilities for a spray like this are endless. I use it for everything.

First, it’s great for it’s marketed purpose: cleaning your hands. But this particular scent is great for so much more!

For instance, it makes great pest control. I spray it on our plants to keep certain bugs away. I absolutely love the earthy, spicy scent… and hugs hate it!

I spray this to calm my doggies down and it works wonders! They relax after a few sniffs.

ALSO great for clearing out bad energy or using as a face mist to spruce up your mood!

The best part: No crazy cancer causing crap! And it’s under $5!!
