5 Ways to Make the Most of Your Year!

Yep. I said this is YOUR year, because, my love – it is!

Hello, 2016! Nice to finally meet you! I’m super excited about this year! Can you feel it?

I have never seen so many people excited to enter a year that holds so much promise, so many opportunities for change, so many people spreading so much light and love. It’s an incredible time to be alive!

So, how can you make the most of your year? I have 5 tips that you may find helpful. Feel free to reference them as the year progresses!

Experience vs. Going Out

I used to be obsessed with “going out” or “hanging out”. I thought life’s deeper, most amazing experiences were at someone’s party. While a lot of these fun events have had their eye and heart opening place in my life, I’ve really learned that the joy I feel in my life comes from our encounters with new experiences and adventures, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon. So this year, begin to boldly do things which you may previously never have thought of doing, or been too hesitant to attempt. Making either a small shift or a big radical change in your lifestyle is the only real way to get more out of life. Trust me, it’s not in that glass of champagne. It is in those deep conversations by the bonfire. Those hard to make phone calls. Those honest friendship hikes. So try to begin to adopt a style of life that may first appear to you to be crazy. But once you become accustomed to such a life you will see its full meaning and its incredible beauty.

Paint The Larger Picture

Goals can be intimidating. I get it. So don’t think of them as goals. Think of them as things you want to do this year that are (and will be) milestones in the larger picture of your life.

The biggest therapy is accomplishment. Truthfully, I want to shake everyone in the World and tell them that they’re beautiful, well, capable souls stuck in sometimes unwell bodies, but that life is absolutely marvelous and manageable once you stop beating yourself up about it.  If I can do it, I promise you that you can do it.  Whatever your dreams and desires are, they are absolutely possible.  Despite your health, despite your circumstances, and despite your finances.  This is your year! Paint the larger picture of what you want your life to look like by sketching it out, by setting some base colors and laying some groundwork. I promise you it’ll pay off.

So instead of thinking, “I want to lose 10 lbs this year!” think, “By years end, I want to be the healthiest I have ever been!” This small shift in thinking can be totally radical.

Don’t give up.

If there’s one thing you cannot do towards me when I have an idea, it’s Stop me. I’ll be damned if that vision is not going to come to fruition. I don’t give up “for no one”, and I’m a perfectionist.   When I was first working on Cured by Nature, and as I edited it this year, I was hesitant at first to write about my journey specifically because it has involved so many other people. It’s hard to put all of those people to the words they deserve and it’s difficult to help others understand how you got where you did without a myriad of support, and sometimes real hate and real rejection, to propel you forward. But I really feel like I have done every word justice. How?

Truly – my entire journey has been almost entirely faith based! But I also didn’t give up one time – or even let myself feel like giving up. I believed it would get done – beautifully written, touching and deeply – without a hitch. And it did.

Without the belief, the vision, and the determination behind something like a grand project or a grand idea to work towards from week to week, I have no idea how I would have kept my head above water or done something like finished an entire book in 3 months. If you believe in what you’re doing, nothing and no one can ever stop you from achieving it! Sometimes you just need the tools, the support or sometimes just the right book or movie to inspire you to be your best!

Enjoy the Journey

When you’re being something you’re not, you’re miserable.  I found this to be one of the most true things I have learned all year, if not all of my life.  Happiness doesn’t come from big pieces of great success, but by small pieces hammered out every day.  By laying the brick to make the Great Wall.  You’ll be as happy as you make up your mind to be RIGHT now.  Being happy on the way doesn’t cost you anything (in fact, it’s one of the ONLY things that don’t cost you anything!): you’ve got to enjoy the journey and take pride in your little accomplishments, and enjoy who you are becoming every single day.  We are infinitely moldable but it is our duty to work on that diligently and with positive thoughts behind it, in order to build up to success.  Success is a pleasure, and it’s entirely relative.  If what I am doing today isn’t gratifying, if I’m not fulfilled: that’s not success to me.  But you cannot change what’s going on around you until you understand what’s going on within you.  Even small, positive changes really help towards this goal.

Lay the Groundwork

Gardening has been so, so soothing to me.  Is everything I want grown to full capacity so that I can harvest and eat it all right this very second?  No!  Not at all! Have I laid the groundwork for the most bountiful, grocery-store trip free summer of my life? Oh hells yeah!  Most mornings are spent in nature. I am laying the groundwork for what 2016 will look like for me, even in this little daily ritual of nurturing my garden.

It still really astounds me how much can happen in such a short time with just a more positive outlook and laying the groundwork for your dreams. Being kinder in your mannerisms and more thoughtful in your day to day actions.  By answering that e-mail a little nicer than you intended, or concentrating on being kinder to your loved ones, giving someone a call you haven’t spoken to or going for a run can change you.

The answer lies in telling yourself: I do not have any other choice but to be successful and well this year, and meaning it.

There simply IS no room for screwing up or negative thoughts or not focusing.  It gets you up early and keeps you working late.

You find the mystery, the not knowing, the working, the convincing, the endless speaking and passion and creative work to be endlessly inspiring.

There is more to create and it is infinite and you, my friend, are powerless to do anything but make more.  And then, to use that towards something good? Well, that’s the icing on the cake.

Diligence is the mother of good luck.

Have fun with it!

Happy New Year! Hope you’re having a beautiful one!
