The Last 10 Years…

The Last 10 Years…

2009 – I was a secretary at a law firm. 23 year old me became a dog mom to Raelie. I was stuck in an abusive relationship with someone who tried to kill me and I saw no way out. I was drinking a lot to numb my pain and was on around 8-10 Rx drugs this year.

2010 – I worked at Cornell in NYC, analyzing sperm samples for their fertility department. It’s even less glam than it sounds. I was on 12 Rx drugs when this photo was taken. Was surviving on food stamps and Ensure’s that were prescribed to me that I drank as meals.

2011 – My best friend took her own life. I attempted suicide two months later. When it didn’t work, I got to the root of the problem and came off all my Rx drugs. Dropped out of college. Quit my last 9-5 job at a lab analyzing asbestos samples. Ended my abusive relationship and in October I road-tripped to Los Angeles with $300 to my name and a big dream. Started my blog, sharing about my Rx withdrawal and all the herbal remedies I was finding that were replacing the drugs I used to be on. I was throwing up 10-15 times a day, all day long. Was featured in a music video during the Occupy Wall Street march. You should watch it sometime. It’s still good.

2012 – got signed to a modeling agency. I had a residency at House of Blues LA where I played with my band every wednesday. Truly happy for the first time ever, even tho at any given time I only had a few hundred bucks in my bank account. I made most of my money working for a dispensary (weed shop) down the block from where I lived.

2013 – I traveled a lot. London, Amsterdam, Paris, Venice, Milan, Miami, NY. It was mostly for work, and I’d always end up spending whatever money I made while I was there on things like food (I mean who can say no to grabbing a delicious gelato outside of the Duomo?) I was constantly on the move, still going through bad Rx withdrawal but living my life the best way I knew how. Moved into my first house in LA. Did my first music video for my song Visual Exchange.

2014 – Dad passed away from cancer. I’ve never been so broken or so sad. I shut down my blog temporarily and on the 6 month post-funeral journey home to NY, got an email from my publishing company, asking if I’d ever thought about writing a book. From that conversation, Cured by Nature was born. Moved to San Diego.

2015- I finished my manuscript by January 1, 2015. Every day was spent working together with my editors to make the book perfect. I was able to both write the book and survive by working on a movie with Seth Macfarlane with a lot of time off set. Still barely making any $ but doing whatever I could, including tons of music videos with artists like Snoop Dogg, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, The Arctic Monkeys and more. Finally got off food stamps, which I’d been on since I was 18 years old.

2016 – Cured by Nature was published and my life was forever changed. I thought maybe my friends and family might read it. Maybe. Instead, every day I got DMs and emails from people, telling me how the book was changing their lives. News outlets took notice. That’s when I knew that I needed to keep sharing my story. I became a dog mom to Ruca. Got engaged. Started Genetix. This was the year I decided that I wanted a job in which I didn’t have to “show up made up” every day and could work from home.

2017 – got a literary agent and my book deal for WILD Habits. Spent the year working on this book. Ended my engagement. Finally started making some $ through my own endeavors, instead of working for someone else. It happened pretty rapidly that I started modeling/acting less and less and working on my blog and Genetix more and more.

2018 – WILD Habits was published in February. I went on book tour. Hired two assistants. Got serious about Genetix. Had fun as a single lady. Traveled on my book tour. Was pretty happy with the idea of never getting married and just adopting some multi-racial babies when I was ready. I spent most of the year writing and recording music. Forbes wrote about me twice. I met Andrew for lunch and my entire world shifted.

2019 – Maybe my most transformative year yet. Married my soulmate and became a wife. Traveled the world, including visiting Bali, Caymans and Hawaii for the first time. Visited the orphanages in Mexico more frequently. Made tons of new friends. Built houses for people in need. Volunteered at food banks. Released my music. Made music videos. Spoke and sang live for the first time in 5 years. Focused on giving back. Genetix was picked up by Walmart, our first retailer ever. Simon and Schuster, one of the top publishing houses in the world, acquired my first book, Cured by Nature. I stopped drinking.

2020 – I rang in the new year with my husband (!!!), our two dogs and our wonderful friends. On New Years Eve we dipped out of the party early and I drove our car to our cozy house with our two dogs and really drank in the last decade. Woke up on January 1st happy, sober, in love and in light.

Wow. To think how sad and broken I was when the first photo was taken, to how vibrant and happy I was on my wedding day… it doesn’t even seem like the same person could be writing this.

If you had told me when I adopted Raelie that ten years from then I’d be living in San Diego, married to my soulmate, with my own company, a successful blog, two books, an EP, 4 music videos, visiting orphanages, in a position to give back (with my own money!)… I would not have believed you. There was no way. I could never have seen the path there.

It happened with baby steps. Each year I went through to write this brought me back to so many feelings: feelings of uncertainty. Feelings of confusion, loss, heartbreak. A mentality where I thought that maybe I didn’t deserve anything good or anything more.

But it happened because somewhere inside me I KNEW I was capable of more. I knew I deserved more. And when people gave me opportunities, I took them.

I can see so clearly how leaving New York has shaped my entire life.

I can see so clearly now how starting my blog in 2011 lead to my book deal in 2014.

I can see how dropping out of school actually allowed me to find the perfect career.

I can see how performing at House of Blues for free in 2012 helped me to release my EP and book shows that truly paid off for me in 2019.

I can see how ending my abusive relationship in 2011 and ending my engagement in 2017 called in the person I was truly supposed to be with all these years later.

I can see how stepping away to grieve my dad and not pushing anything I wasn’t ready for gave me the clarity of mind that allowed me to embrace success in my 20’s, and work to get to a stable place in my 30’s. I can see how each step of the way brought me here, to exactly where I was supposed to be.

The theme of the last ten years?

Work hard. Don’t give up.

Whatever you want, you deserve.

Stay humble. Stay grateful.

Do what’s in your heart, not what other people tell you that you should do.

Happy 2020.

I can’t wait to see what the next ten years bring!

Why I Started My Breast Enhancement Company

Why I Started My Breast Enhancement Company

One of my favorite parts about owning a business like Genetix is the opportunity that it presents me to give back. Whether it’s going down to see the kids at the orphanage in Mexico or having the ability to fight a billion dollar a year electric company to save endangered trees, Genetix has been the glue that’s allowed it all to be possible for me.

Earlier this year I took a good look at our orders and I realized something. That what I was really looking at wasn’t numbers on a screen.

What I was looking at was a lot of women who trusted in us. Women who took a leap of faith on their health. Women who chose our products over surgery. Who gave us so much love. Who told us that we worked.

I asked myself what I would have wanted when I was one of those customers….

See, Genetix was born out of a need I felt I had. I’ll admit it: like a lot of women, I wanted bigger boobs.

I’d rocked an A cup my whole life and wondered if there was any way to make them a little larger.

But I was terrified of surgery. I had spent too long on my health journey and I’ve never had surgery before in my life. I’ve never even sprained an ankle. I had worked hard to get here with my health. And I was grateful every day for that. So many of my friends had experienced frightening complications during their own surgeries and those of family members, with one incident even becoming fatal and my friend having to contact injury attorneys to look into claiming for wrongful death. Is it any wonder I was so petrified?

It wasn’t just the surgery or complications I was scared of.

By the time I considered augmentation, the FDA had already come out with a warning about breast implants.

It’s hidden in plain site in an FDA report published in 2011, where the Food and Drug Administration explains of itself: “Despite frequent local complicationsand adverse outcomes [found in core studies done by the manufacturer’s], the FDA determined that the risks of breast implants were sufficiently well understood for women to make informed decisions about their use.

I’m sorry… what?!

If I hadn’t just searched the black hole of the internet for that information and read all 100 pages of the report, I highly doubt that I would be “informed” or feel “well understood” in the language of adverse outcomes and local complications. I found out that those complications include asymmetry, high infection rates, reconstruction requests and alarming rupture percentages.

So no, thank you.
There had to be another way.

This inspired me to look into products specifically created for the purpose of breast enhancement. There were creams out there that claimed to work, but I took one look at the ingredients and was like no.freaking.way. Why would I put something with parabens – which have been found in breast cancer tumorsanywhere near my breasts?

Was there NOTHING that was totally organic out there and actually worked?

Upon further research my worst fears were confirmed: no such thing had been created.

I knew that if I wanted this product to exist, I had to create it myself.

I used my science background and researched the key and active ingredients that gave these creams their claim, and bought them. Then I solar-infused those herbs into organic olive and almond oil, and a few days later I had a powerful oil that I began to use on myself.

To my immense surprise… my oil worked! I saw results overnight in the first week of use! And the results kept getting better and better over time, with absolutely zero side effects. Within 2 months I had gained two cup sizes!

To be honest, I was astounded.

How on earth did no one know this was an option? How had no one told me about this before? Why was this a big, hidden secret?

I wrote a DIY blog post on Natural Breast Augmentation, and the response was amazing. People tried it and had the same reaction that I did: WOW. This WORKS! But, they asked, could I please just make it into a product? They’d rather buy it from a trusted source than make it themselves.

And that’s how our Activated Enhancement Oil was born!

After our Enhancement Oil resonated so much with people, I was also inspired to make organic, botanical, scent-free face and body serums that addressed the most common beauty needs: dull skin, acne and aging.

Before I started this journey just over three years ago, I was broke. My first book had not yet come out and I was in a bit of a transitional period: still acting, still singing, still blogging, but not positive exactly how I was going to pay rent from month to month. The only reason I was even able to start Genetix was because of all the people who e-mailed me about the oil. They pre-ordered it. With those pre-orders, I had enough money to bring my vision to life.

That’s what inspired me to start giving back. Every month I go through our orders and I pick one customer to randomly send our entire collection to.

Last month, I checked my PO Box and amongst some packages and cards, I had a letter. Because it had no return address, I opened this letter a little reluctantly. But after just a few seconds of reading the card inside, I was so, so, SO glad I did. Here’s the gift that I received. It said:

“Dear Tara,

Last month I opened my email from Genetix and panic set in. I had an order for over $500 of product coming my way! I thought someone hacked my account and went on a shopping spree!

When I found out it wasn’t a mistake and I hadn’t been charged I wanted to cry. Your generosity came at the just the right time and meant more than you will know! I just had my 4th beautiful baby and things were hectic to say the least. I was feeling down on myself wanting to lose baby weight, my hormones were all over the place and my skin wasn’t as beautiful as it looks now 🙂

A few years back I stumbled upon your enhancement oil after making the worst decision in my life. I had got breast implants (which never ended up making me happy) and that caused a cascade of health issues. I had them removed 1.5 years later and found your oil as a saving grace to truly make me feel beautiful in an all natural, organic way.

I am grateful for that bad experience, as it changed my life for the better. I now have a holistic approach to all that I do and much more self love. Thank you again for your generosity. I absolutely LOVE your products and hope to be able to buy more in the future.

Keep being kind and spreading love. That’s what changes the world.

Love one happy Mama,

I am a puddle.

Every single time I read it, I tear up. This is everything I’ve ever wanted and so much more than I could ever dream of.

When I started Genetix, I didn’t even think about it as a company. I thought MAYBE we’d sell to the women who’d first reached out to us from the blog post. I never thought we’d reach the masses. Maybe the moms and sisters of our OG customers, but not people everywhere.

We are now in over 100 countries and have made it all around this beautiful globe. Our one and only store is the largest retailer in the world.

To just make one person’s life a little easier, makes everything it took to get here so, so worth it.

I’ll never stop this little service. I will keep finding more women to surprise every month as we grow. I will pray and hope and wish that it’s always the woman who needs it the most. The woman who has asked for nothing… but truly deserves everything.

And as far as Porsche’s card? Well, I know I needed the reminder. So I just wanted to remind you, too:

Keep being kind
and spreading love.
That’s what changes the world.

The Truth About Implants

The Truth About Implants

Here’s what the doctor probably won’t tell you…

3 Natural Ways to Increase Breast Size

When I started my company Genetix two years ago, I never could have seen this wave of survivors coming. Brave women telling their stories each and every day. Women who survived life with a horrific illness haunting them, sometimes for decades.

Just search #Explant on any social media platform (or Google the word) and you will find hundreds of thousands of stories of women who have faced an increasingly uncomfortable truth: their breast implants were making them sick.

While a few years ago, Breast Implant Illness was a wild theory, today new studies have revealed that in fact, it’s very much real. And the symptoms are downright frightening.

They include (but are not limited to) arthritis, Sjogren syndrome (dry eyes, dry mouth and compromised immunity) and Scleroderma (a group of rare diseases that involve the hardening and tightening of the skin and connective tissues). In many people, scleroderma also harms structures beyond the skin, such as blood vessels, internal organs and the digestive tract.

The World Health Organization and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have identified another possible cause for concern. This relates breast implants to a rare cancer called breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).
In 2011, the FDA quietly announced that “Individuals with breast implants have a risk of developing breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma, or BIA-ALCL. BIA-ALCL is not breast cancer—it is a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (cancer of the immune system).”

At the same time an international scandal revealed that tens of thousands of breast implants had been made with industrial silicone instead of medical grade silicone. The French company behind this scandal admitted to, “authorizing the use of two gel formulas at: A high-end version for wealthier clients, using American-made medical silicone, and a “house” formula for everyone else. This was made from cheap industrial silicone, meant for use in mattresses, allegedly in order to cut costs and boost profits.”
Without doing an explant and having her implant tested, it was impossible for a woman to tell if their implants had been made from medical gradeor mattress grade silicone. WTactualF.
Additionally, breast implants are known to cause other potential risks such as breast pain, scarring, infection, asymmetry, the need for more surgery, rupture, back pain, thinning of breast tissue and more. The #BreastImplantIllness hashtag on Instagram alone has over 31,000 posts.
So, how do you avoid this altogether and still achieve the fullness and cup size of your dreams?
After years of our own research, here’s our 3 Step Program for bigger breasts (with the science behind it to boot!)

Step 1:

Reviews on Wild Yam are glowing. This herb helps the body produce more prolactin and progesterone, and it’s also considered an anti-androgen. The phyto-estrogen in wild yam to pay attention to is diosgenin, which will help improve estrogenic activity in your body.
As hundreds of happy customers will tell you, Dong Quai is an estrogen regulator. It’s known for helping to resurrect your period, control your hot flashes and whip your breast size into shape. Take these Dong Quai capsules twice a day. This natural herb plays a very useful role in breast enlargement and breast tissue health is also improved by dong quai, as it increases collagen levels.
Step 2:

Genetix Activated Enhancement Oil works naturally to increase breast size, so you can get the size you desire without any harmful health effects! Our ingredients are thoughtfully chosen based on their anti-androgen properties, without affecting your estrogen levels. Use code NEW for 20% off 🙂
The active ingredient in Genetix Enhancement Oil, zhi mu, is an ancient Chinese herb that mimics the mechanism of estrogen, without causing the side effects of modern estrogen supplements. Zhi Mu brings about the same beautifying effects, such as a bigger and fuller breasts. It also causes fat cells to divide and enlarge, so anywhere it is applied to retains more fat.
It contains Wild Yam (mentioned above) and Fenugreek – one of the top herbs on the list for breast growth. New mother’s often use fenugreek to increase milk supply, as it’s known to increase prolactin levels naturally.

Who doesn’t want results sooner? If you’d like to see a noticeable difference in growth even quicker, we recommend the tips we’ve shared here,
Step 3:

You can increase your breast size with exercise in the same way you can form and shape any other muscle in your body. We do this when we do squats or lift weights. Men do this when they “work on their pecs”.  Your body can be manipulated physically in any way. It simply responds to what you’re doing. Do some simple moves consistently and your body will respond accordingly. Here’s some simple moves to do every day:

  • Clasp your hands together in front of you like you are praying.
  • Keep your elbows out to the sides as far as you can.
  • Squeeze your hands together as hard as you can go, concentrating on the muscles behind your breasts to use the force.
  • Hold for 5-10 seconds.
  • Rest for 5 seconds.
  • Repeat

You can also do push ups and lift weights, concentrating on the muscles behind your breasts to place your force.

This Popcorn Alternative Is Better Than Popcorn (GIVEAWAY)

This Popcorn Alternative Is Better Than Popcorn (GIVEAWAY)

I recently went on a scenic, life changing Ayurvedic retreat in the mountains at the Art of Living Center in Boone, NC with three good girlfriends, Sahara Rose, Rosie Acosta and Alyson Charles. Ayurveda is a holistic mind body life-science that believes that every individual is unique and no one lifestyle works for everyone. The foundation is based on listening to your body and doing what works for you.

Every day as part of our retreat, we checked in with an Ayurvedic doctor, who told us what we should be eating based on our doshas (I am a Pitta-Vata). The Pitta dosha controls digestion, metabolism, and energy production. The primary function of Pitta is transformation. Those with a predominance of the Pitta principle have a fiery nature that manifests in both body and mind.

During our morning check in, we went over my diet. What I eat at home during morning, noon and night, including snacks. I answered everything honestly.

And then my doctor asked, “You don’t eat popcorn, do you?”

I don’t. At least, I couldn’t remember the last time I had.

“Good,” she said, “Because you shouldn’t.”

That struck me. Since I kicked my sugar addiction years ago, I also stopped the habit of eating processed or ‘instant’ foods like microwavable popcorn. I haven’t owned a microwave since 2011, which helps.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I pretty much grew up snacking on salty Pop Secret every single night.

And I’m so glad that I stopped that bad habit. Because what I didn’t know was that my choices could have killed me.

During most of our childhoods, the buttery flavor of microwavable popcorns like Pop Secret and Orville Redenbacher contained the chemical diacetyl, which has been linked to cases of bronchiolitis obliterans, a rare life-threatening disease, often called popcorn lung. It wasn’t until consumer concerns arose in 2007 that ConAgra Foods Inc., General Mills Inc. and the American Pop Corn Company all promised to make the change and remove diacetyl because of consumer safety concern.

At the time, those companies accounted for more than 80 percent of the market for microwave popcorn consumed every year.

By the way, brands like PopSecret and Jolly Time still use trans fat today, which is considered one of the most deadly fats available because it is associated with 20,000 heart attacks a year and over 7,000 deaths, according to the CDC.

Surprisingly, my health assessments at the Ayurvedic retreat were already very in line with what I was already craving and consuming. Pretty much everything I was told to eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks was already waiting for me in my fridge or cabinets at home.

That’s when I discovered was that my intuition about myself is pretty spot on, because I’ve been avoiding popcorn for years. Instead, I’ve been snacking on a delicious, vegan, organic popcorn alternative. With no guilt, health concerns or regrets.

Bohana has been my popcorn alternative and my favorite snack since I first tried it. Made from Popped Water Lily seeds grown on a farm in Bihar, India, this snack has been an Ayurvedic superfood staple for centuries. Water Lily seeds are one of the most prescribed seeds in Ayurveda because of their neutral character making them beneficial for all body types. Oh, and by the way, they’re DELICIOUS. I go through about a bag a day, and all my friends take one bite and are obsessed!

The founders Priyal and Nadine are both spiritual junkies, curious to learn about some of the world’s most ancient practices and traditional superfoods. On this journey, Priyal went back to her Indian roots and rediscovered her childhood snack – Popped Water Lily seeds. When Priyal introduced this puffed super snack to Nadine, she was inspired and made it her go to snack too! The two never looked back and vowed to bring this ancient super snack to free spirit snackers everywhere.

You know I love a company for plenty more reasons than it makes delicious food. I also love Bohana because of their relationship with their farmers, their commitment to fair wages, ethical, sustainable harvesting, and fully collaborative supply chain. The cultivation of lily seeds doesn’t destroy the ecosystem, the whole cycle is sustainable, seasonal and naturally occurring. This allows them to source the highest quality ingredients that you can be proud to eat.

I am officially hooked! I literally take a pack with me wherever I go, and it’s my staple go-to snack at night when I’m catching up on my Netflix shows. It tastes 100,000x better than popcorn, with a texture and flavor similar to puffed corn or those old Kix snacks (but savory!) Plus, the ingredients are amazing for you! Each 110-calorie serving provides three grams of protein and at no point are you subjected to artificial flavors, colors or additives. It’s vegan, gluten free and absolutely devourable.

Bohana Popped Water Lilly seeds come in 3 incredible flavors. My personal favorite are the Himalayan pink salt and Cheddar options, which both harken back to my childhood – without the health risks!

Today, we’re giving you the chance to try a box containing packs of all three kinds!
