Top 5: Skin Game Changers

With season changes, inclimate weather, and shorter days creeping in, skin has a tendency to get dull, dry and neglected.  A lot of times we forget that our skin is actually the largest organ in our body.  Cold fall winds and dry winter air can be brutal on our precious pores.  However, I’ve picked up on some “skin game changers” lately – everything from beauty products to routine changes to added nutrients – to keep skin feeling supple and beautiful all season long!  Here are my Top 5 Skin Game Changers, including some Before and After photos!

5. The Culligan Filtered Shower Head

3 weeks ago I was mere days away from cutting all my hair off.  First of all, my hair has turned naturally ombre from the California sun and salt water, which can leave my now-blonde ends extremely dry.  There were parts under my crown that were literally dreading, and no amount of conditioner, brushing, combing, or oil treating was working to stop this crazy process.  My hair was, in a word, straw.  I spoke to a Hair Artist about this at a shoot, and she told me that when she first moved to LA, the same thing happened.  She shaved her head TWICE before she found the culprit: her own shower!

Who would have thought that my biggest skin enemy didn’t lay in my food, my environment, my skincare routine or my genes?  My biggest skin enemy is just plain Hard Water!  After researching the water in my area, I found out that I have basically been bathing in Chlorine and Hard Minerals for over a year now!!  No WONDER my hair and skin sucks!  I ordered the Culligan Shower Head right away, and the results have been AMAZING.  The difference is incredible and it feels like showering under a waterfall!  No more itchy, dry skin, or worse – the filmy paste that seemed to stay on my skin after I dried off!   If you’ve tried everything in the book and still haven’t found your way to clear skin and sexy hair, this $30 purchase is worth every penny!  I also installed it myself, which I am probably way too proud about but that goes to show how simple it is! ;)

4. MLS The Youth Dew

May Lindstrom Skin: The Youth Dew is a sample that I picked up at Evolue in Beverly Hills and can’t get enough of!  With over 20 regenerating oils and infused with CoEnzyme Q10, this self adjusting, skin protecting serum will balance, heal, plump and hydrate your precious skin!  It also smells absolutely delicious!  When I first tried this at Evolue I spent the rest of the night making people smell my palms – when they weren’t glued to my own nose!  Once I finally got to put this on my face, I was in heaven!   My goodness!  Roses, orange peels, olive oil, kukui nut oil!  No wonder it costs $120 for less than an ounce!  This is the full luxury experience of green beauty, and it addresses problems for every skin type: acne-prone, sensitive, dry, mature, and aging.

3. Osmia Organics Black Clay Facial Soap

I did a review on this soap almost a year ago, but after making another purchase of it recently, it’s definitely worth another mention for all my new readers!  The breakouts that I suffer from are mostly hormonal – mostly around my mouth, chin and jaw line.  Realllly not the best place to have big blemishes when you’re a singer or an actress or have a career where people are staring at your mouth most of the time.  I also have a mild case of Perioral dermatitis, which can be aggravating, embarrassing, and day-ruining. :(

This is – and I’ll say this forever – the ONLY soap I will EVER use on my Face!  It’s moisturizing, cleansing, and it really works to take care of active breakouts, as well as those “under the skin”.  Any time I run out of the Black Clay Facial Soap I immediately notice an increase in my “under the skin” breakouts creeping in, and my PD flaring up.  I don’t recommend anything else to clear your skin up as a natural soap cleanser!  At $22 the bar may seem a bit pricey, but it’s completely worth it!

2. MLS: The Problem Solver

As I mentioned, I finally made my way over to Evolue (mentioned in THIS POST) last week and got me some samples of some May Lindstrom Skin products at May’s own suggestion.  I have extremely sensitive skin and am very, VERY wary about throwing down almost $100 for anything if I feel like I can make a healthy alternative myself.  Since I most often buy raw materials in bulk and make my own clay masks, $100 is usually my monthly skincare budget.

Needless to say, I am not disappointed!  The first thing the sales girl in Evolue did was open me a bottle and have me smell it!  Oh, heaven!  Raw Cacao, Soil Nutrients, Salts, Warming Spices!  Doesn’t get much more luxurious than this!  I was over the moon to leave with some samples of this goodness and have been using it a few nights a week since.   I am really happy to finally have jumped on board with this, considering that 100% of The Problem Solver reviews are super complimentary and amazing!

A lot of products claim to change your skin: I can honestly say that this one actually does! I noticed a change immediately and the ritual of putting this amazing masque on is almost addicting!  It’s pure Skin Detox: it quickly and effectively fights blemishes, tightens pores, extinguishes inflammation, heals scars, and leaves skin younger, brighter and softer!

1. Fish Collagen

There was definitely a period of time when I was first detoxing that my skin looked especially dull, dry, and almost blue-pale instead of olive and healthy and freckly.  No matter what oils I used, vitamins I took, or food I ate, I couldn’t seem to get back the healthy, youthful complexion that I had always enjoyed.

For the past few months, I’ve been taking vitamins that have a high concentration of Fish Collagen.  I swear my skin has never looked better!  I broke out some photos of me at 18 the other day, just in case I was tricking myself into thinking that new vitamins have literally wiped years off my appearance.

Me 9 Years Ago (circa 2004):

Me today:

I mean, for a difference of almost ten years (NINE YEARS what what WHAT?!!!), I am absolutely astonished!   Do you know how many (super delicious but very dehydrating) cocktails I’ve drank in 9 years?!  Do you know how many nights I’ve stayed up writing Thesis’s on Classical Conditioning and MicroBio & Immunology?  Do you know how many days I’ve spent in the sun in 9 years?  A LOT.  Friggin’ Sorcery!

It’s nice to be able to acknowledge, too, that this is the only thing that’s changed in my daily health routine that would have such a drastic effect!  There’s definitely a lot to be said about healing your body from the inside out!  The benefits of Fish Collagen include:

  • Promotes strong and resilient skin matrix
  • Promotes skin elasticity and firmness
  • Provides the building blocks for collagen synthesis
  • Assists in cell turnover in the skin
  • Antioxidant for UV generated free radicals
